Pregnancy and the Holidays: How to stay safe and healthy

It is common to feel anxious, overwhelmed or sad during pregnancy. However, these feelings can be difficult to deal with over the holidays when you are surrounded by celebrations and joy. Tina Prendeville, a midwife suggests these ideas:

  1. Make stress relief a priority

    • In what ways can you take some stress out of this season? if it’s tiring to walk around the shops, buy presents online or get holidays dinner groceries delivered. If it’s uncomfortable to wrestle with wrapping paper around your bump, invite someone over to help you, or try gift wrap services! Most of all, make sure there is someone you can phone and talk to if things get a bit much.

  2. Don't be afraid to turn down invitations

    • Think about how you feel and if you are up to socializing. It is completely okay if you can’t get into the festive spirit or do not have the energy to celebrate. Try not to judge how you feel, but make sure you are not isolating yourself during your pregnancy.

  3. Look after yourself

    • Try your best to avoid alcohol and eat healthy. Remember that you don’t actually need to eat for two- try to eat regular, balanced meals and stay as active as you can.
