How to manage stress and anxiety during pregnancy

Dr. Domar, Director of Mind/Body Services at Boston IVF says it is highly normal for pregnant individuals to wake up at night and worry. She has experienced it in most of her clients and it is so common that she has even labeled it “the midnight imp”. She says anxiety and worry can be a good thing, as it is our body’s normal way to prepare for motherhood. However, when it gets too much, there are ways to help your stress.

  1. Dr. Domar is a big fan of talk therapy. Whether it is your therapist, OB-GYN, or friends. If you are struggling to find somebody to talk to or are not quite ready to go see a medical professional, she suggests joining Facebook groups with people who are due the same month as you or using the app Peanut which connects women across fertility and motherhood.

  2. Another big relief comes from exercise. If your doctor says it’s okay, physical activity such as walking, prenatal yoga, or even getting a massage are great ways to relieve anxiety.

  3. Most importantly, do not be afraid to ask for help! Take some deep breaths and remember that you are not alone!
