Normal physical changes to your body during pregnancy: the first trimester

Pregnancy is a time of change and naturally, your body will also undergo many changes. Here are some common changes that can occur during your first trimester of pregnancy (weeks 1-12) and how to manage them.

Fatigue

  • As your body produces higher levels of progesterone, you will experience increased tiredness

  • Take frequent rest breaks during the day and scale back on non-essential activities and responsibilities

  • Get regular exercise- take walks and keep your body moving but do not push it if you lack energy

  • Maintain a balanced diet and drink a lot of water

Breast tenderness

  • Your breasts may feel swollen and tender or tingle. Your nipples may also stick out more than usual

  • During the day, wear a bra that gives you good support in the back and on the sides. Padded shoulder straps or bras made from cotton can help

  • At night, try a sleep bra- these are softer and lighter bras that still provide you some support as you sleep

  • Do not wash the area around your nipples with soap as it can dry out the skin. Instead, clean the area with just warm water

  • If your skin stretches and begins to itch (on your belly, on your breasts or anywhere else), avoid hot showers and baths. Pat dry and apply moisturizer before your skin dries completely. You may keep your moisturizer in the refrigerator as well. Using a humidifier at home may also help with discomfort related to your skin. If itching becomes bad and nothing seems to help, see your doctor

Increased urination

Fullness or mild aching in your lower abdomen

Nausea with or without vomiting (morning sickness)

  • Morning sickness is caused by increased release of hormones. It is at its first during the first three months of pregnancy. While symptoms can occur them any time of the day or night, most women experience the worst nausea during the day.

  • To help with morning sickness, try changing what, when and how much you eat. Avoid foods and smells that make you feel sick and try taking ginger or acupressure. If at-home remedies do not work, talk to your doctor for medication.
