Normal physical changes to your body during pregnancy: the second trimester

The second trimester (weeks 13-27) is the easiest part of pregnancy - while you may start to look more pregnant, the symptoms from your first trimester may ease or disappear during this time. Read more about the symptoms during your second trimester and how to treat them.

  • Breast changes

  • Your breasts will get larger and heavier. You may invest in a larger bra that has more support. As your breasts grow, the veins become more noticeable. Your areola may also become larger and produce bumps which will go away after you have your baby.

  • Around 16th-19th week, you may experience a yellowish discharge (Colostrum) from your nipples. This is “pre-milk” that helps protect your baby from disease during the first few days of breastfeeding- your body is just preparing for breastfeeding!

  • Hemorrhoids and constipation

  • Hemorrhoids are swollen veins at your anus that often stick out. bleeding, itching and pain are common symptoms.

  • To ease hemorrhoids and constipation, eat a high-fibre diet (whole fruits, vegetables, and whole grains). Drink plenty of fluids and do not strain during a bowel movement. Increased exercise also helps.

  • To treat the itching, keep the anus clean by wiping carefully or using a squirt bottle after each bowel movement. Take warm soaks to shrink or soothe hemorrhoids. Add baking soda to the water to relieve itching. Apply ice pack compresses and avoid sitting for long periods.

  • Heartburn

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms, including heartburn, are common during pregnancy as your uterus grows and pushes on the stomach.

  • It helps to change your eating habits - eat several small meals and wait 2-3 hours after you eat to lie down. Chocolate, mint, acidic or spicy foods and coffee can make symptoms worse. Stay away from smoking or chewing tobacco.

  • For GERD symptoms at night, raise the head of your bed by 15-20 cm.
